Alice "Kay" Shomate, age 65, of Ormond Beach passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017.  She was a graduate of Mainland High School in 1969 and received her B.A. degree from Warner Southern College, in 1997 and her M.A. degree from University of Phoenix in 2004.  In her personal life, Kay loved crafting and received many awards for her artistic talents including being selected by the Florida crafters guild to have an ornament displayed on the 1993 Clinton's White House Blue Room Christmas tree.  Kay's artistic talents were many, and she was an extremely accomplished potter, paper maker, cake decorator, floral designer, and seamstress. She was an avid reader and scholar and beloved mother, sister and friend to her colleagues.  In the community, Kay served as President of the Trails HOA for 2 years. During her professional career she worked at Daytona College in the Library department and more recently at Embry-Riddle University in the online division.  She is survived by her mother Patricia Edgar; sister Rebecca "Susan" Hockenberry; and daughter Suzanne Shomate. A celebration of life service will be held at The Casements: 25 Riverside Dr, Ormond Beach, FL 32176 on Saturday July 22, 2017.
