Arlene was born on July 19, 1936, and passed away peacefully in her home in Miromar Lakes, Florida, on June 12, 2025, after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion. She was the loving wife of John M. Carlo, her high school sweetheart, with whom she shared 67 incredible years.
Arlene was raised in Paterson, New Jersey, and graduated from Paterson's Eastside High School in 1954, marking the beginning of her remarkable journey. Arlene lived in New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida, embracing each new chapter with enthusiasm and optimism. After returning to New Jersey from Colorado, she attended and graduated with honors from Bergen Community College in New Jersey, receiving an AA degree in nursing, a testament to her dedication and perseverance. She continued her education at Dominican University in New York State and received her BS degree in nursing with honors, solidifying her passion for the field. Never satisfied with learning, she enriched her expertise by completing programs at Rutgers University and received a CPM and FCSP, inspiring others with her thirst for knowledge. Arlene was awarded a Fellow from the American Society for Health Care, a well deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions.
Arlene had a distinguished professional nursing career, marked by her compassion, expertise, and leadership. She was appointed to the Board of Directors of the ASHCSP and received the outstanding member award in 2002, a testament to her tireless efforts. She was the author of over 35 professional technical magazine articles on serialization of hospital instruments and was recognized nationally as a subject matter expert, sharing her wisdom with others.
Arlene was one of the founding members of the Hearts of Miromar in her community and served as an officer for many years, as well as a volunteer with Florida Repertory Theatre and the Edison museum, embodying the spirit of volunteerism and community service. Arlene was an active member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers, Florida, where she sang in the choir, was an officer in the Women's Guild, and volunteered for many other church events, living her faith with joy and humility
Arlene leaves behind her loving husband, John, of 67 years; four wonderful children, John, James, Joseph, and Lisa; plus six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved and cherished deeply.
Arlene's Funeral Mass will be held at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, located at 13060 Palomino Lane, Fort Myers, on July 14th at 11:00 AM, with visitation at 10:30 AM, a celebration of her life and legacy.
Arlene's final resting place will be with her loving parents in Saint Michael's Cemetery, 120 Saddle River Rd., South Hackensack, New Jersey, on Saturday, August 23rd at 10:45 AM, a place of peace and eternal rest
