Obituary

Barbara Ann Sypien , age 73, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024 at St Francis Reflections Hospice in Titusville, Florida. She was surrounded by love from her daughter, Justine, at her time of passing.

Barbara was born and raised in Flushing, Queens, having graduated from St Agnes Academic Academy then continuing her education at Flushing Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse at Flushing Hospital, beginning her career on a Medical-Surgical floor then  Pediatric Oncology before beginning her career in the Emergency Department. It was there that her passion for nursing flourished and she would find her niche in the field.

Barbara met the love of her life, Peter Sypien and the two would marry in July 1986. Together they would share a daughter, Justine, born in May 1987. Shortly thereafter, they would make the big move to Florida, planting roots in Titusville, Florida, on the Space Coast.

Barbara continued her nursing career in the Emergency Department at Parrish Medical Center. There she would also find a passion for teaching future healthcare providers, becoming adjunct faculty at Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College) mentoring students in the Emergency Department. She retired from the Emergency Department in 2005 continuing her career in outpatient Cardiac Rehab before hanging up her nurses cap for good in 2009.

Barbara loved bowling and was in a women's league most of her adult life, spending Wednesday mornings at River Lanes Bowling Center. Barbara was also a member of the local Elks Lodge, cooking & volunteering with the members of Lodge #2113. She loved all things Disney and was a passholder for the entirety of her life in Florida, spending long weekends at the parks with family, eventually spending monthly outings with her beloved Peter enjoying the sites and sounds of Disney World.

Anybody who knew Barbara knew she was the queen of cruising, having sailed over 100 times with Disney Cruise Line. Onboard, her and Peter were fondly referred to as "Mom & Dad" and well known by many cast & crew members. They spent their retirement cruising, enjoying all the ships had to offer and christening "Mom's Spot" on Castaway Cay, often with a glass of prosecco in her hand.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Peter, missing him the last 3 years he's been gone. Also, her parents Frederick Macchio and Josephine Macchio (Bielawa).

Shs is survived by her daughter, Justine (John) Waughtel of Jacksonville, Florida, and granddaughter Josephine. Her beloved brother Fred (Laura) Macchio, niece Jennifer (Joe) Moncada and nephew Michael Macchio.

No funeral or services have been arranged, per her final wishes. Please instead make a donation in her and Peter's name to St Francis Reflections Hospice in Titusville, Florida.
