Obituary

Barney Joseph Renton, Jr., also known as Big Barney, passed away March 25, 2025, at home in the company of his loving family. Barney was born June 15, 1941, in Manhattan, and lived a life as big as his laugh.

After moving to Tampa, Florida in his teens, he met Yvonne and they married and spent the next 66 years together. During that time, they raised a family of three with love and care. Starting in IT in the early 1960s when computers were a new thing, Barney continued his work in computer science for 40 years. His career took him across the U.S. to Texas and California, north to Ottawa, Ontario, and across the globe to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He loved people and different cultures and never met a stranger.

Barney had a degree from Thomas Edison State University, a private pilot's license, and certification to teach motorcycle safety, which he did for 20 years after retiring. He had lifetime membership at Umatilla Masonic Lodge #65 and was worshipful master in 2010. Barney loved camping, water and snow skiing, reading, learning, and all kinds of food. He was full of wisdom and stories and greeted life with curiosity and good humor. He and Yvonne have lived in Mount Dora for 27 years, familiar faces to so many in the community. He will be greatly missed.

Barney was predeceased by his parents Barney Sr. and Mary Renton, brother Richard Renton, and daughter Dawn Howard.

He is survived by his wife Yvonne Renton (née Henderson), his son Barney Renton III, his daughter Denise Renton (Ron Arnold), his grandchildren Lindsey Howard (Karsten Berg), Ian Renton, and Marleigh Arnold, his sister Linda Dooley, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Dixie. Donations may be made to the Humane Society of Lake County in his memory.
