Obituary

Barry L. Bloss, age 82, died at home, surrounded by family and in Jesus' loving arms, on Friday, November 24, 2023 in Sarasota County, Florida, where he moved after Retirement.

Barry is survived by his wife, Lola (Cosey) Bloss and his children:  Barry Bloss Jr. (Jodi) of York, Lisa Boyle (Patrick) of Gibsonia PA, Dana Sweitzer (Mike) of Manchester and Kristi Bennett (Nygel) of Philadelphia.   Barry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Terry Bloss of York, PA.  He is also survived by his brother and sisters in a close-knit family:  Glenn Bloss (Deb), Lonna Bahn, Kay Monteith (Alex) all of York, PA and Darlys Witta (James) of Westfield, Indiana. He had a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

Barry was born on December 10, 1940, in York, PA to parents, James Bloss and Arbella "Doll" (Rode) Bloss.  He graduated from York High School, Class of 1958 and stayed in touch with his friends through a monthly class breakfast.

After High School he worked for York Bank and Trust before accepting a Police Officer position with York City Police Department, quickly advancing to Detective before retiring after 26 years. He had several high-profile cases, which were written about in Detective magazines, and he received a letter of Commendation from the Director of the FBI.  Following a brief time in the Sheriff's Office, Barry was elected as the York County Coroner, where he served for another 16 years. He tried to make a difference for the community by giving Public Service talks at schools to promote seat belts, to older adults about hazards in the home and continued programs on car seats and child safety.

Barry's biggest joy was his family.  He married Lola in 1988 and they had 4 children in their blended family, eight grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was a social, active man who was deeply involved in his churches:  Living Word Community Church in Red Lion, PA and Harvest Chapel of Venice, Florida. He loved Gospel music and, especially playing cards with friends and relatives.

A Memorial Service will be held in Florida at Harvest Chapel of Venice, 101 Cortina Blvd., Venice, on Monday, December 4 at 11:00 am with a light lunch to follow.

A service will be held at Living Word Community Church in PA at a later date.
