Obituary

Bernard Flynt “Chico” Johnson, Jr., was called home to be with the Lord on March 30, 2026, in Sarasota, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived 80 years of a life deeply and fully loved.

Chico was born on February 5, 1946, in Mobile, Alabama, to Agnes Pauline and Bernard Flynt Johnson, Sr. He grew up along the river, where he spent his days fishing, water skiing, boating, and embracing the simple joys of life—setting the tone for a lifetime of adventure, laughter, and love.

God, family, and country were the cornerstones of Chico’s life, and he held each of them close with unwavering devotion. He was a man of strength and character—kind, patient, loving, and, at times, a little wild in the best possible way. He worked hard to provide for his family, took immense pride in them, and loved them fiercely.

Chico is survived by his beloved wife, Aida, his partner in life and love. He is also survived by Patti, the mother of his three children: his daughter Kristin and her husband Raul, along with their children Madelyn and JT; his son Flynt and his wife Carrie, along with their children Ella, Vivienne, and Jack Flynt; and his son Todd and his wife Shannon, along with their children Lyla, Brody, and Campbell. Chico is also survived by Michael and Ayumi Eisenberg, along with their son Kazuma; and Eric and Emily Bloomquist. His legacy lives on in each of them.

After graduating from high school, Chico answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He found his place in the U.S. Naval Construction Force, known as the Seabees, whose proud motto is, “We Build, We Fight.” Chico embodied that spirit of strength and service throughout his life.

During two tours in Vietnam, Chico displayed not only courage but heart. He taught himself to play the trumpet and took great honor in paying tribute to his fallen comrades by playing Taps, ensuring their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

To know Chico was to love him. He had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Whether on the water with family and friends, sharing stories, or simply enjoying life’s moments, he brought joy wherever he went.

Chico’s life was a testament to faith, love, service, and devotion. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the family he cherished, the friends who loved him, and the countless memories made along the water and beyond.

A service to honor and celebrate Chico’s life will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida. With full military honors, family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who gave so much to those he loved and to the country he proudly served.

"Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord."    Matthew 25:23
