Obituary

Cathy Lyn Augustine, 73, passed away on June 23, 2026 after a courageous battle with a neurological disease that she fought valiantly.

Cathy was born in Prince George’s County, Maryland on July 27, 1952 to the late Philip and Catherine (Rein) Garofolo. She traveled the continental United States, with her family, from Maryland to California and back throughout her younger life. She made it her mission to improve the lives of others through her dedication to the citizens of Maryland and Prince George’s County in her work and through her charitable and volunteer work. She was predeceased by her siblings, Floyd Garofolo (Vicki), Phyllis Settle, (Jerry) Florence Evans (Charlie), Connie Agnew (Jim), and Phillip “Bokie” Garofolo (Debbie).

Cathy met her soon to be husband, Timothy G. Augustine and they were married at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro on June 26, 1971. They began their lives together working multiple jobs, Cathy working part-time while in her final year of high school and Tim in miscellaneous part-time jobs from night security on construction projects to gas station attendant while employed full-time by the District of Columbia Air National Guard.

Cathy and Tim built their home in southern Anne Arundel County and they both found more career oriented employment in 1972. Cathy went to work with the 7th Judicial Circuit in Prince George’s County where she ultimately became the Director of the (Circuit Court) Assignments Office, ensuring, on a daily basis, that criminal and civil cases were assigned to the 25 Judges for the Circuit Court. Cathy was much beloved by all of the judges and attorneys who knew and worked with her. In 1974, Cathy and Tim welcomed their daughter, Amy Marie Augustine into the world.

Cathy provided amazing support to Tim in his chosen career as a professional firefighter with the Prince George’s County Fire Department. She retired from the Assignments Office in 1997 and continued to support Tim as he had retired in 1995, but continued his public safety career with the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Maryland State Board of Elections.

Cathy’s interests included vegetable and flower gardening, preparing gourmet meals, and baked goods for her family and friends, and in her younger years, playing softball with the Prince George’s County Professional Firefighters Wives Association. Cathy also enjoyed watching Amy play softball in recreational leagues in Anne Arundel County and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2004, Cathy and Tim moved to Florida, seeking out milder winter weather, and settled in DeLand. They joined the congregation at St. Peter Catholic Church where the met many new friends with which to share their Maryland based culinary skills, especially with seafood.

There will be a funeral Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand, Florida, to be scheduled at a later date, followed by Celebration of Life gathering for friends and family at the Don Bosco Hall on the grounds of St. Peter at 359 W. New York Avenue, DeLand, Florida.

The Augustine Family requests that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy would be most appreciated as donations to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation at t2t.org or to a charity of your choosing
