Obituary

The Earthly Life of Cecil J. Moyers, 90 years of age, was sadly and forever stilled Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in Wildwood, FL. Known to his family and friends by his middle name "Joe", he was born on September 23, 1934, in Harrisville, WV to parents, John L. and Beulah (nee Varner) Moyers and was one of eight children.

His family moved to Marietta, OH in 1946 where they established business, emotional, and generational roots that continue to this day. Moyers attended

Marietta High School where he excelled in sports receiving Letters in football, track, and basketball. Upon graduation, Moyers enlisted in the United Statas Marine Corps and received his Basic Training in Paris Island, SC where his ability as a marksman was noted. He was a trainer for new Marine Recruits at Paris Island focusing on Readiness, Small Arms, and Large Bore Weapon Systems training.

Moyers also received specialized cold-weather training in California to support the Marine Corps and shipped out of San Diego headed to the Korean Peninsula to serve in our country's contingent to the United Nations Command; an especially challenging sea journey due to his propensity for motion-sickness. His naval convoy was diverted to Occupied Japan due to the signing of The Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953, which precluded the landing of additional troops in Korea. After a brief period where Mr. Moyers was stationed in Occupied Japan, he served the remainder of his tour in the Marine Corps, attached to US forces stationed in The Hawaiian Territory where he was a member of the Marine Corps Ready Reactionary Forces. Moyers was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps in 1956 with the rank of Private First Class.

Returning to Marietta, he met Jacqueline S. Lowe of Lowell, OH and they were happily married from 1957 until her death in 2001. From 1957 until 1959, Moyers was a civilian contractor at the Marietta Repair Station of the United States Army Corps of Engineers where he worked to maintain the picket dams and locks system on the Ohio River.

Leaving the Corps of Engineers In 1959, Moyers began a long career centered in the retail world of the Marietta and Parkersburg, WV areas during which he became well-known as an innovative leader in merchandising and customer-centric service. His retail career included increasingly responsible positions with Robert's of Marietta, First Settlement, Dills Bros., and Pioneer Chevrolet Cadillac.

He served two terms as president of the Marietta Area Merchants Association, served 18 years on the Board of Trustees at Selby General Hospital and served six years as an appointed member of the Marietta City Planning Commission.

In 1997, Mr. Moyers retired and moved to Wildwood, FL where he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. In 2003, he married Isabelle L. Stommel, his devoted wife for the rest of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as several siblings. He is survived by his loving wife, Isabelle L. Moyers; his son, C. Joe Moyers Il of Wildwood, FL; his daughter Julie S. Moyers, daughter-in-law Julia Nevin and grandchildren, Abigail and Claire (the lights of their grandfather's life) all of Indianapolis, IN. Additionally, Moyers is survived by his extended family of siblings, generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many friends in the Marietta, OH area. Moyers lived by the Creed that one must live serving as a Fisher of Men, deep love of his country, and goodness at the core of each Human.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Marietta at a later date, with private interment at East Lawn Cemetery.
