Clarence Brown Whichard III, known affectionately as “Chris”, passed away on July 31, 2026, in The Villages, bringing to a close a life marked by dedication, achievement, and vibrant community engagement. He was born on October 12, 1940, in Greenville, North Carolina to Clarence B. Whichard II (1915-2003) and Marion C. Whichard (1918-2006). Chris touched the lives of many through his commitment to family, community, fellowship, professional accomplishment, and his resolute bearing toward the pursuit of happiness.

Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Linda F. Whichard, who was his partner in life for over 60 years as a companion and finally his caregiver. His legacy continues through his devoted children: son C. Scott Whichard, and his daughter, Tamlin D. Whichard. Chris was delighted with his granddaughter, Fahra Aliz Whichard-Nelson (daughter to Tamlin) and her husband Josh Whichard-Nelson. Their recent marriage and the subsequent birth of his great-grandson: Clarence Frederick Whichard-Nelson (born May 2026), brought him the purest satisfaction during his last year with us. He is also survived by his sister Carole A. Werking and her husband Noel of The Villages. He was preceded in death by his brother Howard C. Whichard (1943-1983). He demonstratively loved his many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles and extended family with inclusion; as much as his immediate family. This ancestral Whichard tradition (brought from Scotland in the 1600’s) defined him; as we all are proudly carrying his abundant love onward with tenacious strength, unwavering mercy and generous hospitality as family traits through generations going forward.

Throughout his career, Chris exhibited a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit, owning many businesses and providing consultation. His professional endeavors were characterized by leadership, integrity, and an enduring commitment to achieving excellence. His strengths with technology and business mathematics combined later in his life with a practical knowledge of taxation, to assist many people and businesses in finding continued success.

Beyond his working life, Chris was deeply involved in organizations that reflected his interests, values, and passions; like the Masons. He attained the distinguished honor of serving as Grand Master of the Universal Lodge of the F. & A.M., a role he held with respect and dedication, epitomizing the values of brotherhood and service. He was a leader of the Scottish Rite and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Chris’s personal pursuits were as impressive as his professional ones. He was an Army reserves man (ROTC). While in Medfield, Massachusetts he was a: soccer coach, baseball coach, ballet enthusiast, scout leader, fisherman, and a big-hitter on the softball field. His passion of skiing and socializing shined during the Boggestow Ski Club and Franconia Ski Club years; functioning for decades as one of the patriarchal conductors for the bigger ski-family. He was an involved member of the Chequessett Club in Wellfleet, and Ocean Edge Golf Club in Orleans, Massachusetts; all while forming friendships and memories that enriched his life.

After moving to The Villages in 2008, Chris became a participant in numerous clubs and organizations such as: the Mustang Convertible Club, Hadley Social Club, Gourmet Club, Wine Tasting Club, and enjoyed discussing sports more than club topic matter—reflecting his continued enjoyment of camaraderie, charity, and community involvement after his retirement.

Chris will be fondly remembered for his wit, warmth, and personal engagement with all of those he met. His presence enriched every community he entered, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched. He firmly believed that southern food is good for the soul.

As we mourn Chris’s passing, we remember him as a fostering unifier wielding empathy with might; celebrating a life well-lived—a life of family devotion, enthusiasm, generosity and enjoyment. His memory will be cherished always.
