Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Colin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on June 2, 2026. Born on December 3, 1938, in Brighton, England, Colin lived a life rich in love, craftmanship, and creativity until the age of 87.

Colin was the beloved son of George Hogbin and Ivy Field and is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Derek and Brian. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 60 years, Verena, with whom he shared a beautiful journey of life and love. Together, they created a family that was the center of Colin’s world: daughters Vanessa (Chris) and Sandra (John), who continue to carry forward his legacy of kindness and dedication. His grandchildren, Samantha (Brian), Jacob, Ashley, Colin, Casey, Katie, and Andrew, remember him as a guiding light and source of endless inspiration. He was proud as well of his great-grandchildren, Landon, Oakley and Daniel, in his later years. Colin is also predeceased by their many family pets that he cherished and enjoyed through the years.

Colin’s early years were marked by a passion for craftsmanship and learning. He pursued carpentry school in Brighton, England, before furthering his education in architectural drawing at a technical school in Virginia. His talents were not confined to the classroom; as a young man, he was a lifeguard on the beaches of Brighton then went on to serve proudly in the British Army, where he distinguished himself as a competitive swimmer, winning medals reflecting his dedication and skill.

After marrying Verena in 1966 in the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland, the couple embarked on a new chapter in the United States. They settled in Virginia where Colin founded his own carpentry business. His eye for detail and commitment to excellence led him to a successful career with Whiting Turner Construction as a Superintendent, where he worked until his retirement in 2005.

Colin's life was filled with creativity and community. An accomplished woodworker, he crafted beautiful furniture and intricate crown molding for their Virginia home, imbuing it with warmth and character. His musical talent shone through as he played the piano by ear, delighting friends and neighbors at gatherings. Starting in his 50s, Colin discovered a love for painting, capturing the beauty of landscapes and the essence of portraits with his brush. He continued these hobbies during his retirement years in Ormond Beach, Florida where he and Verena resided the last 21 years.

The family will honor Colin’s remarkable life at a service on July 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the 81 Oaks Senior Living Center in Sarasota, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at 81 Oaks for the compassionate care and support provided to Colin in his final weeks.

Colin’s life was a testament to the power of love, creativity, and dedication. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace, forever cherished and never forgotten.
