Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dale DuWayne Branch, who left this world on February 7, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on February 22, 1949, in Hayfield, Minnesota, to Wayne Branch and June Branch (Amundson), Dale lived a life defined by love, resilience, and devotion to his family.

He graduated high school in 1967 and pursued his passion for weather and science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earning his master’s degree in meteorology and atmospheric science. He went on to build a long and respected career with the National Weather Service, serving in roles from forecaster to MIC (Meteorologist in Charge), roles that required precision, focus and calm under pressure — qualities that reflected his steady nature. Throughout his career, he was known for his expertise, mentorship, and dedication to advancing the field. In 2000, he was honored with a Bronze Medal Award for Superior Federal Service from the U.S. Department of Commerce for his work in developing the Collaborative Convective Forecast Product. Over the years, he formed lasting friendships with colleagues, and he deeply valued the time spent reconnecting, sharing stories and maintaining those long-time bonds.

In 1988, Dale married the love of his life, Lois Tellefson. They shared 37 years of marriage rooted in partnership, loyalty, and deep friendship. Together they raised their daughter, Kimberly (Jonathan) Ralph. Dale took immense pride in his family, and nothing brought him more joy than being “Grandpa Dale” to Roosevelt (3½) and Violet (8 months). He truly came alive when playing with them — down on the floor, laughing, engaging, and completely present.

Dale is survived by his devoted wife, Lois; his daughter, Kimberly (Jonathan) Ralph; his cherished grandchildren, Roosevelt and Violet; and his siblings, Kris Fritze (Mike), Jim Branch (Gabie), and John Branch (Kathy).

Dale loved gathering with his siblings and their spouses, often spending hours around the table playing cards, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. He also treasured time with extended family and long-time friends, valuing the deep connections and shared memories that enriched his life.

He had a deep love for the water. Whether living on the lake in Lake Elmo or along a canal in Cape Coral, Florida, he felt most at peace boating and simply being near the water. He enjoyed watching sports — especially basketball and football — and could often be found keeping a close eye on the stock market. He and Lois played cards together every day, a simple ritual that reflected their steady companionship. He also loved staying active through walking, biking, and swimming.

In 2009, Dale received a life-saving heart transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. That gift gave him 16 more years — years he filled with family time, gratitude, and joy. His strength and perseverance through that journey were a quiet testament to his character.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association in honor of Dale’s life and in gratitude for the gift of time his heart transplant provided.
