Obituary

Dan Lamar Clay, 77, passed away on March 16, 2026 in Fort Myers, Florida, leaving behind a legacy defined by his deep faith in God, steadfast devotion to his family, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.

Dan was born on January 21, 1949, in Meridian, Mississippi, to Lamar Calvin and Evelyn Blanks Clay. He spent 13 years in the Army Reserve and more than 43 years as a Special Education teacher in public school systems spanning three states, touching countless lives with his compassion and deep sense of purpose.

During the summers, Dan took on painting jobs to support his family, often bringing one or more of his eight children along for the adventure. With a household that lively, there was never a shortage of helping hands—or opportunities to learn the value of hard work.

At the heart of Dan’s life was his enduring love for his wife of 53 years, Susan. Together, they built a life around faith and devotion to each other. After retiring from the Mississippi school system, Dan—never one to shy away from warmer weather—moved with Susan to the sunshine and white-sand beaches of South Florida, where they continued to share in simple joys side by side.

He found great delight in the ordinary things life offered: tending his garden with care, camping under the stars, casting a line while fishing, and above all, creating lasting memories by spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. Dan was an avid collector of stamps, coins, and license plates, hobbies that reflected both his curiosity and appreciation for history. He was a good listener who always made time for others, offering wisdom, encouragement, and kindness.

Dan is survived by his wife Susan Marshall Clay, and their eight children: Brennan Clay, Andrew Clay, Olivia Calloway (Brad), Daniel Clay (Shelby), Sarah Gatewood (Joseph), Philip Clay (Jennifer), David Clay (Allison), and Christopher Clay. He was a proud Papaw to 19 grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. John Clay.

A celebration of life will be held at Collinsville United Methodist Church in Collinsville, Mississippi, on April 4 at 11:00 a.m
