Obituary

David Martin "Big Dave" Skonieczny, of Litchfield, Connecticut, and Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in Naples, Florida. Born and raised in Bristol, Connecticut, he was the son of the Konstanty "Gus" and Mary Skonieczny. He remained deeply rooted in his family’s heritage, particularly the journey of his father, a courageous Polish immigrant whose legacy is officially registered on The American Immigrant Wall of Honor by The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. A proud and devoted veteran, David served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from October 1953 to October, 1956. He was stationed at the historic Marine Barracks (aka 8th & I) in Washington, D.C. Recognizing his natural leadership and fidelity, he was appointed to the permanent rank of Sergeant in 1956. Decades later, his wartime service continued to be recognized by a grateful nation, receiving a formal Certificate of Recognition from the American Legion Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 in Bantam, Connecticut, as well as citations of appreciation from the Disabled American Veterans.

Following his military service, David went on to pursue his undergraduate studies in Social Science, Geography, and History at Central Connecticut State University. He went on to earn his Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Connecticut in 1967 and was a long-standing, certified member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (NASW). David channeled his disciplined spirit and deep empathy into a lifelong career in public education and clinical therapy. For decades, David served as the full-time school social worker for the Watertown Public Schools, providing life-changing guidance to generations of students. His exceptional leadership was formally recognized by the Watertown Board of Education, when he was awarded for his outstanding service as the Interim Coordinator of Special Education. Deeply committed to the governance of local education, David also served as a dedicated member of the Litchfield Board of Education. In 1994, the Board presented him with a formal Citation of Honors, celebrating his extraordinary, lasting contributions to both school and community. Alongside his work in public education, he maintained a private practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist through the Interpersonal Development Center / Family Therapy Specialists in Litchfield.

David’s booming presence, political leadership, and passion for community building left an indelible mark on his beloved hometown. Serving the town as a former Litchfield Selectman, David was instrumental in the birth of the historic Litchfield Hills Road Race. In early 1977, he played a pivotal role within the town governance to facilitate and secure the vital administrative approval needed for the inaugural running of the now-legendary race to take place. For several years, his commanding and unmistakable presence was a centerpiece of race day as he served as the "Voice of the Race" on the microphone, and served as the official starter. Furthering his lifelong commitment to his community, David also served on the Litchfield Beautification Commission, dedicating his time to preserving and enhancing the natural character of the town. When he and his first wife Marlene, retired to Naples, Florida, his commitment to service never wavered. He became a cornerstone of local veteran advocacy, serving with the Marine Corps League of Naples. On December 27, 1996, he was honored with the League's Distinguished Service Award for meritorious service. He was also profoundly dedicated to children’s causes by donating his time to local programs mentoring children and young adults.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marlene (Doyle). He is survived by his children, David (Marcie) and their children Claire and Conner, Dean (Paige), and their children, Hank, Luke, and Nate and his daughter Dawn; his current wife, Beth; and the Breakell family: stepsons Alan and Lee, step-granddaughter Kaylyn (Michael) Duval, and step-great-grandchildren Zechariah, Nathaniel, and Azalia. He also leaves behind a vast network of former students, fellow Marines, and friends who will forever miss his leadership, generous heart, and sharp wit.

A funeral service will be held July 18th at 2:00 pm at the Lourdes Shrine in Litchfield, Connecticut, followed by a graveside memorial service with military honors at St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Arrangements are being coordinated by Thurston Rowe Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in David’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the Marine Corps League.
