Obituary

Dennis Randall Nelson, affectionately known as “Pop” or “Randy,” passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2026, surrounded by his two beloved dogs. Born on April 9, 1955, in Charleston, West Virginia, Dennis lived a life marked by service, hard work, a love of family, and a welcoming spirit that made others feel at home.

Dennis proudly served eight years in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Second Class Petty Officer. His military service was an important part of his life, and he remained connected to his community through his involvement with the VA and the American Legion.

Throughout his working life, Dennis held a variety of positions, including restaurant manager, butcher, and accounting professional. He also served as a McDonald’s general manager and was recognized as General Manager of the Year, an accomplishment that reflected his dedication and commitment to his work. He attended college and carried his experience, determination, and practical approach to life into everything he did.

Outside of work, Dennis enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. He loved fishing, baking, and football, particularly cheering for Florida State University and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Whether spending time outdoors, sharing something he had baked, or enjoying a game, Dennis found happiness in the things he loved and the people around him.

Above all, Dennis will be remembered for his warm and accepting nature. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and family was an important part of his life. Those who knew him will remember his easygoing spirit, his love for the people in his life, and the sense of belonging he helped create. His legacy lives on in the family and friends whose lives he touched and in the memories they will continue to cherish.

Dennis was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn “Keefer” Highbottom; his father, Ernest Woodrow Nelson; his stepmother, Ruth Hewitt; his adopted daughter, Christina Johnson; his brother, Gary Nelson; and his former wife, Lillian Carlson.

He is survived by his son, Ernest Randall Nelson of Belleview, Florida; his brother, John Nelson of The Villages, Florida; his adopted sons, Dustin White of Clermont, Florida; Robert Logue of St. Cloud, Florida; Patrick Rivard of St. Cloud, Florida; Aaron Mienkie of St. Cloud, Florida; and Jim Berry of Charleston, West Virginia; his adopted daughter, Angie MarLett of Texas; his uncle, Ralph Keefer of Athens, Ohio; and his adopted grandchildren, Matthew Berry, Christian Marlet, Toshia Berry, and Cody Knapshied.

Dennis will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us, the warmth he shared, the memories he created, and the love he leaves behind will remain in the hearts of his family and friends.

Dennis will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL 33513 on November 20th, 2026.  Time of service coming soon.
