IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Earl
Metz
April 21, 1938 – July 20, 2025
Donald E. Metz, age 87, died of complications from frontal temporal dementia on July 20, 2025 in Venice, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sharon A. Metz (Bachtold), his sons, Mark (Jill) Metz and Jeffry (Eric) Metz, his daughter, Sherri (Jeffrey) Morton, six grandchildren and his sister, Vicky S. Ryan. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl E. Metz, his mother, H. Isabelle Metz (Finefield) and his brother, Alan L. (Jean) Metz. Don was born on April 21, 1938 in Fairbury Hospital, Fairbury, Illinois and raised on a farm near Forrest, Illinois. He graduated from Illinois State University in 1960 and accepted a position in the management training program for SS Kresge Company, which later became Kmart Corporation. Don worked his entire career at Kmart in a variety of positions, including store manager, district manager, head of the Jupiter discount store division, buyer in charge of various departments and lead merchandiser when Kmart opened its first stores in Hawaii. He retired from Kmart in 1994. Although he lived near Detroit, Michigan most of his life, Don and his wife enjoyed spending winters after retirement in their Florida home, situated near a golf course and many of their Kmart friends. He loved playing golf, bridge, euchre and other games, as well as watching the four major Detroit sports teams and Michigan State football and basketball. Around 1970, while attending church in suburban Chicago where he lived at the time, Don became a founding member of the Witnesses Quartet, a men's Southern Gospel quartet that began singing in churches in the Chicago area and upper Midwest. He carried his love of Southern Gospel music with him when he moved to Michigan in 1972, where he formed and sang with several other gospel quartets. Most recently Don sang with a group called His Harmony with his son, Mark, his daughter, Sherri and his son-in-law, Jeffrey, performing in Florida and venues throughout the upper Midwest for nearly 10 years. Don was a strong believer in the Lord and was deeply involved in the churches his family attended in suburban Detroit. He was also a devoted and supportive husband, father and grandfather, attending games and performances by his children and grandchildren, and bringing his children and their families together for a vacation each year in Northern Michigan or at their Florida winter home. He was adored by his family and served as a role model for what a good husband and father should be. A memorial service will be held for Don later in the year in Venice, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Tidewell Foundation, Inc., which supports Tidewell Hospice in Venice, Florida. The foundation can be reached at Tidewellfoundation.org.
