Donald B. Winegard, a man of steadfast dedication and compassion, was a pillar of strength whose legacy is etched in the hearts of all who knew him. His unwavering commitment to family and distinguished military service, Don's life was characterized by honor and humility reflected in the values he cherished and lived by each day.
With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald B. Winegard, age 89, on June 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A dedicated husband, cherished father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, Don was a decorated United States Navy officer who lived a life of honor, service, and profound devotion to his family and country.
Bom on September 16, 1935, in Pendleton, New York, Don grew up in a family with a deep sense of duty and military service. He enlisted at age seventeen in the United States Navy in 1952 and began a distinguished career as a ready reservist that spanned over three decades. Rising through the ranks with grace and grit, he served his country in peace and conflict alike, earning numerous commendations for his leadership and valor. He also enjoyed a successful career in business management, first with International Multifoods and later with the Ohio Public School system.
Don's personal life was always centered around family. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Eileen Patricia (O'Connor), with whom he shared over 70 years of unwavering love and partnership. Together they raised four children, instilling in them the same values of integrity, kindness, hard work and resilience that guided Don throughout his life.
In retirement. Don and Pat found joy in the simpler rhythms of life. They moved to Venice, Florida where they enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, providing an oasis of family fun. His love, storytelling, humor, and warm laughter became the treasured hallmarks of family gatherings.
He is preceded in death by his eldest son, US Navy Senior Chief (ret.) Bradley J. Winegard and is survived by his beloved wife Patricia; his children Derek (Kathi), Brian (Sandy), and Robin Schroeder (Gerald); ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, all of whom carry his legacy forward with pride and love.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepard Episcopal Church in Venice, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a veterans' charity of your choice.
