Dora Basile
Broughton
March 21, 1923 – April 4, 2017
Dora Basile Broughton passed into eternal life on April 4, 2017 at home in Lady Lake with her daughter by her side. Dora was born on March 21 st , 1923 in Zara, Dalmatia (formerly Italy,) currently Croatia to Michélé Saverio Basile and Danica Radmanovic Basile. Her father was a military officer who transferred the family to Asmara, Eritrea the then Italian Colony in Ethiopia. He was shot down over North Africa while serving with the British and her mother remained in Africa raising Dora and her brother Saverio.
Dora was educated in Africa and attended the Medical College before her marriage to Emerson Wendell Broughton, a petroleum engineer with Aramco. They then moved to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia where her daughter Genzi was born. They remained in Saudi Arabia for 2 years and then spent an additional 4 years in Africa before settling in Los Angeles, California in the mid – 50s. Dora was widowed early and raised her daughter while working as an actuary for Prudential Insurance.
Dora was an accomplished classical pianist, artist and linguist speaking 8 languages; Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Serbo-Croatian, Russian and Japanese.
Once retired she travelled extensively around the world solo, visiting all of Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, Mexico, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Everywhere she went she recorded the images in a sketchbook. She translated these images into oil paintings leaving behind a behind a beautiful visual depiction of her many journeys.
Dora loved all forms of creativity, particularly the ballet and was blessed to see her daughter become a ballerina.
In her later years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer, she came to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Lady Lake, FL. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a fiercely independent, highly intelligent, feisty Renaissance woman who was way ahead of her time.
Dora was predeceased by her parents Michélé Saverio Basile and Danica Radmanovic Basile, her brother Dr. Saverio Basile and her husband Emerson Wendell Broughton.
She leaves behind her beloved daughter Genzi Broughton Nachod, son-in-law Thomas Constantine Nachod and her two cherished grandsons, Justin Alexander Nachod of Philadelphia, PA and Schuyler Constantine Nachod of Chicago, IL.
A memorial service to celebrate her amazing life will be held at a future date. Final arrangements are entrusted to Baldwin Brothers.
