Doris Marian Harrington (nee Makowski), 65, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2024 of complications from brain cancer. She was the devoted wife of Terrence Joseph (T.J.) Harrington residing in New Smyrna Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Barbara Makowski. She is survived by her siblings Alice Smith Logan and her husband Michael (Waynesboro, PA), David Makowski and his wife Linda (Sykesville, MD), Jean Waagbo and her husband Stephen (Christiansburg, VA), and Susan Makowski (Orlando, FL); beloved aunt of Nicholas Smith and his wife Elizabeth, Justin Waagbo and his wife Bailey, Kristen Waagbo and husband Kyle, Katlyn Smith, Jessica Makowski, Madeline Makowski, and Alex Makowski; and adoring great-aunt of Kohen & Remi Smith & Livvi Tavares, Avery & Zoe Waagbo, and Caslen & Lane Skiera. She is also survived by her aunts Mary Tarr and Wallis Kelbaugh, and uncle Jerry Tumminello including many cousins and their families.

Doris was born in Baltimore, MD and graduated from Mt. Hebron High School in Ellicott City, MD. She was an outstanding athlete in both high school and college.  She attended the University of Maryland and Colorado Women's College as a scholar athlete and graduated with a B.A. in Criminal Justice in 1981. From a young age Doris aspired to become a Police Officer to serve and protect her community and joined the Safety Patrol Team in elementary school.  As a teenager she was a member of the Howard County Law Enforcement Explorer Post.  Later she became a Boardwalk Patrol Officer in Ocean City, MD then faithfully served the citizens of Annapolis as a Police Officer until her retirement from the Annapolis Police Department as a Lieutenant.  She was a board member of the Maryland Special Olympics and participated in the Polar Bear Plunge and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. In addition, Doris held a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University and graduated from the FBI Academy.

Doris and her husband T. J. retired to New Smyrna Beach, FL where Doris continued to serve her community in volunteer activities for the rest of her life including the Holly Hill Police Explorer Post of Volusia County, the Southeast Volusia Relay for Life, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the ACA Harris House and 12 years with Little Pink Houses of Hope. Over her lifetime, Doris helped to raise more than $7million for the communities she served.  Doris enjoyed various water activities such as SCUBA diving, paddleboarding and surfing, and was a competitive USTA tennis player.  In addition, Doris completed numerous marathons and ran the Disney Marathon for 15 years, at the start of its inception.  She loved her family and friends fiercely and brought life and energy to every person in which she had contact.  Doris was everyone's sweetheart and a friend to all.  She lived her life in the service of others.  Her beautiful smile, warmth, zest for life, kind heart, superb athleticism, fun laugh, wit, humor, voice of reason, mentorship, lover of all stray cats and unconditional love will be greatly missed.  Heaven gained one of our best.
