Dorothy “Dot” Thomas, age 89, passed away peacefully at home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida on March 6, 2026, with the loving support of her daughters. Born June 2, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio, Dot lived a full and vibrant life defined by independence, generosity, and deep devotion to family and community.
Dot was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Frank Thomas.
She is survived by her daughters, Terri Carbonelli (Michael) of Wayne, New Jersey, and Eileen Thomas (Jon Hoyt) of Eugene, Oregon; her grandchildren Michael Provissiero, Michael Carbonelli Jr., Nicholas Carbonelli, and Samika Hoyt; and five great-grandchildren.
Dot spent many years as a homemaker and was known for her many talents and determination. Whether sewing, hanging wallpaper, or tackling any home project, no task was too daunting for Dot. She had a knack for getting things done and took great pride in creating a beautiful home for her family.
In 1988, Dot and Frank retired and moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where they built a wonderful life and lasting friendships. They enjoyed tennis, lively cocktail hours on the beach, and Saturday mornings at Jason’s Corner. Dot became a devoted volunteer at Bert Fish/AdventHealth Hospital, where she generously gave over 20 years of service. During that time she worked in the coffee shop, volunteered at The Pink Door resale shop, and most recently served as a welcoming front desk greeter.
Dot loved life’s simple pleasures: a good cocktail hour, shopping at Bealls Outlet, and chocolate Blizzards from Dairy Queen. She was an avid bridge player and cherished her time with her card group, the “River Rats.” In her later years, she became a beloved resident at Lexington Place, where she lived for the past five years.
Dot was famously organized, sharp as a tack, and fiercely independent. Even in her final days she remained strong-willed and clear-minded, calling the shots right to the end. She passed away on her own terms, surrounded by the love of her family.
Dot will be remembered for her strength, her wit, her loyalty to friends and family, and the vibrant life she built in the community she loved.
A funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 4000 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach, Florida. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Diamond Head Point Clubhouse, 503 N. Causeway, New Smyrna Beach.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Dot’s memory may consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that was close to her heart.
