Obituary

Doyne Max Fiscus, age 90, passed away on February 3, 2026, leaving behind a life rich with curiosity, connection, and character. He was born on February 21, 1935, in Clinton, Indiana. Max lived as he chose, guided by his own interests and an unconventional spirit.

Max grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1953. A gifted athlete, Max was a standout runner in high school and college. He broke a 20-year cross-country record and went on to compete for Indiana University, proudly wearing the cream and crimson. Go Hoosiers! His love of movement and the outdoors never left him.

He moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1966 where he worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs as a recreational therapist. After retirement, he farmed, tended bee hives, and embraced a life close to the land. Later, he made his home in Zellwood, Florida, where his hands were rarely still—often found building golf carts, tinkering with new ideas, or working on his latest project. A serial inventor at heart, Max never ran out of ideas that just might be the next big thing.

Well ahead of his time, Max was a passionate environmentalist. In the 1970s, he started an insulating business driven by his belief in energy conservation and responsible living—long before it was mainstream. A proud nonconformist, Max followed his convictions without apology and lived exactly as he believed. He was a true people person—someone who knew everyone, welcomed anyone, and left a lasting impression in every community he called home.

Max is survived by his children Laura Finfrock (Allen) and Fred Fiscus (Crissy); his grandchildren Morgan Fiscus (Sean), Will Fiscus, Joseph Finfrock, Sarah Finfrock, Clay Fiscus, and Maggie Fiscus, his great-grandchild, Denver Massie, and his godson Forrest Hellebusch (Sara);. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Franklin Fiscus, Irene Craft Fiscus, daughter Julie Fiscus, son Matt Fiscus, and by his longtime companion and dear friend, Lynn Karolyi.

Max will be remembered for his originality, his restless curiosity, and his refusal to live conventionally.
