Obituary

Dr. Frank Romanelli, CHA, a husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, veteran, chef, educator, and pioneer in the hospitality industry, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, in Venice, Florida, on his 96th birthday. Born on July 6, 1930, in Dearborn, Michigan, Frank lived a remarkable life defined by service, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to teaching others.

Frank’s early years were shaped by hard work and determination. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, he used the G.I. Bill to pursue his education at Michigan State University, graduating in 1958. His career began in the kitchen as a chef at the Detroit Statler-Hilton Hotel, where he developed the discipline, creativity, and leadership that would guide him for decades to come.

Frank continued to advance his education with distinction. In 1970, he graduated from Texas A&M University (Canyon) with a Master of Business Administration, earning recognition as an honor graduate. He went on to complete his doctoral studies at the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1976 with a Ph.D. from the College of Education — a milestone that further solidified his lifelong dedication to teaching.

Frank became a transformative figure in hospitality education. He served as Executive Chef-Steward at Red Run Country Club before joining the opening management teams for Marriott Hotels #3 in Dallas and #4 in Philadelphia. His passion for teaching led him to Texas, where he became the founding director and professor of the restaurant management departments at Del Mar College and Amarillo College. In 1970, he joined the University of Houston as the first full-time professor for the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, shaping the future of the industry through his instruction, mentorship, and vision.

His career continued with distinction as Dean of the Oral Roberts University Graduate College of Business and later as Director of Hospitality Management at Tiffin University. Over the course of his life, Frank influenced students, colleagues, and professionals, and maintained contact with many of them for decades.

In 2017, Michigan State University honored him with the Lifetime Academic Achievement Award, recognizing his decades of leadership and contribution to hospitality education.

Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy, and his son, Dean. He is survived by his son Kevin (Gloria), five grandchildren, and thirteen great‑grandchildren.

Frank will be remembered for his sharp mind and deep faith. An inurnment will be held August 6, 2026 at 11:00am at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
