IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edsel "Large"
Rudolph Hughes
December 15, 1946 – July 3, 2025
Edsel Rudolph Hughes, lovingly known by all as "Large," passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in Ormond Beach, Florida, at the age of 78. Born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, Large was a graduate of Columbus High School.
Large was a proud graduate of Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Textile Management. He went on to build a successful career in pigment sales, founding and operating Image Color, Inc., a company that allowed him to blend his entrepreneurial spirit with his deep industry knowledge.
Large's interests were as big as his personality. He had a lifelong love for music and found joy in boating, fishing, and spending time in the company of those he cared for. In later years, he developed a keen interest in target shooting and became a respected range safety officer at the Volusia County Gun Club. He was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
After retiring, Large cherished the slower pace of life—enjoying the beach, quiet moments with his beloved wife Carol, and the company of his cherished dog, Foxy. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach.
Large was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Hamm Hughes and Leon Hughes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann Hughes, and by his devoted children: Leslie Mote (Jay), Debi Hughes, Pam Lappies (Phil), Tracy Hohman (John), and Reid Fields (Daphne). He was a proud grandfather to Brittany Sparks (Ben), Nikki Mote, Megan Lappies, and Grant Hohman, and a great-grandfather to Barrett Sparks. Large is also survived by his brother, Tom Hughes (Debbie), his niece Laura Demain (Len), and their children.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, located on Nova Road in Ormond Beach, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prince of Peace Catholic Church with the memo: Mary's Prayer Garden for Ed Hughes.
Large's legacy is one of warmth, laughter, loyalty, and strength. He was a man who made an impression wherever he went—steadfast, fun-loving, and endlessly generous with his time and stories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
