Ed was born on April 28, 1935 in Syracuse, NY to Edward J. and Sophia (Balon) McDonald. He married Jean Marie Smykowski on June 16, 1956 at St. Mary's Church, Elmira, New York. He served in the United States Marine Corps. October 28, 1953 to October 25, 1955 as PFC (E2) with 3rd Battalion Reinforced, 6th Marines, 4.2 Mortar Platoon – Mediterranean Cruise on the USS Monrovia AP A-3. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal. Ed worked at the Elmira Water Board, Owner/Operator - Ed McDonald Excavating and Ed's Heads Portable Toilets until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of the American Legion.
