Obituary

Jeopardy lost its biggest fan when Elsie "Kitty" Brophy passed away on March 20, 2023 in Venice, FL., at the age of 93.

Born in Greenwich, Ct in 1929, Elsie spent her first 60 years in various towns in southern Ct, raising her three children, Alan G Waterman, Jane L DelVecchio, and Sandra A Joyce, before retiring to Punta Gorda, FL, in 1987 with her first husband, Charles B Waterman.

Kitty married Charlie in 1949 and became a classic 1950s housewife. Dinner and dessert were promptly at 6, always homemade and served after her whiskey sour and Charlie's chilled Manhattan. She kept a spotless house with no help from her children, whom she often threatened "wait 'til your father gets home" but rarely followed through with. She is remembered fondly by her children for being a closet smoker: blowing smoke through the front kitchen window, watching for Charlie to come home – he thought she had quit years earlier. She was also pretty good at slipping in a colorful curse word when you least expected it, much to her children's delight.

She was a wonderful pie maker, a ruthless bridge player, and a Scrabble master. Because Kitty was a natural hostess, their house was the center of family holidays and many parties.

During their time in Connecticut, Kitty and Charlie were avid sailors and active members of the Milford Yacht Club. Kitty, initially a reluctant first mate, eventually took on the role with enthusiasm, and they enjoyed many sailing adventures together. Sailing itineraries often included Port Jefferson, Block Island and many other New England ports.

After Charlies death in 1991, Kitty met John Brophy while a member of the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, and they married in 1996. Kitty and John enjoyed travelling; visiting Hawaii and taking many cruises throughout the Caribbean. Kitty's claim to fame was that her grandmother and great aunt had survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and this story landed them at many a Captain's Table for dinner. Much like her grandmother, Kitty was a survivor. She overcame both breast cancer and Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

After John's passing in 2019, Kitty moved to a retirement community in Venice, FL, where she could be closer to her youngest daughter, Sandra, and where she resided until her death.

She is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. There will be a private family memorial service over the summer where her ashes will be spread over Long Island Sound, as she requested. Donations can be made to Empath Tidewell Foundation, a Hospice center, at [tidewellfoundation.org.]
