Obituary

Frederick W. Blake of Fort Myers, FL and Abington, MA passed away on April 27, 2025 at age 88. Married for nearly 57 years, he was predeceased by his devoted wife Ellamae (Mae). Fred is survived by his children Debbie (Rich) Anderson, Sandy (Chris) Harte and Jim (Brenda) Blake. Grandchildren, Richie (Steph) Anderson, Jackie Anderson, Danny (Emma Smith) Anderson, Christopher (Shannon) Harte, Ryan (Jess) Harte, June (Brandon) Gilliam, Richard (Michelle) Joyce, Jeremy (Tish) Joyce, Madison Louise Blake, 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Many cousins, nieces and nephews including a special nephew Blake Estes, and many dear friends including Dana (Ann Marie) Marshall.

Fred was born in Everett, Massachusetts to the late Ralph and Helen Robertson Blake. Fred graduated from Abington High School. Although he and Mae moved to Fort Myers after his retirement as a civilian Arresting Gear Mechanic at the Naval Air Station in South Weymouth, Fred always called Abington home. He served on the Abington Fire Department and was the Director of Civil Defense for the town for many years.

Fred was an active member of the Abington Lions Club for almost 55 years. In addition to roles within the Abington club, he served as District Governor, Cabinet Secretary and Council Chairman at the state level. His real passion was for music and was the founder of the Massachusetts Lions All State Band. Students across the state were sponsored by the local clubs and came together to practice and perform at the annual Lions State Convention and had the honor to participate at Lions International Conventions where the band was recognized with first and second place trophies. When not busy with the Lions Club, Fred enjoyed cruising with friends, going to the dinner theatre, sipping Crown Royal and playing cribbage.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Fred in Abington at a later date.

The family would like to thank Jessica Machado and the staff at Eagle Ridge Health and Rehabilitation for the care they provided to Fred in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to Massachusetts Lions Eye Research. Donations can be sent to Debbie Hayes at 37 Island Rd., Millis MA 02054. ( www.MLERFI.com )
