Obituary

Frederick James Bottcher passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Born in the Bronx, New York, Fred carried that New York edge with him throughout his life. He lived on his own terms, with a strong personality and a presence you didn’t forget and usually couldn’t ignore. He loved fast cars, collected guns, and had a great appreciation for good food, especially if it was worth talking about later.

Known to many in the Boilermakers as “Freaked-Out Freddy,” he built connections and stories that will live on through those who knew him. He had strong opinions and a style that was entirely his own. He was stubborn, with a unique sense of humor that those close to him knew well and others learned quickly.

One of his proudest accomplishments was owning a 1962 Jaguar XKE, and if you knew him, you probably heard about it more than once. If you knew Fred, you likely heard him say, “Can you do me a favor?” and you knew it probably wasn’t optional.

Fred chose not to have a formal service. If you would like to honor his memory, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause he supported for many years.

He is survived by his family, who will carry his memory forward and, likely, a few of his stories too.
