Gary
McDowell
March 9, 1936 – April 14, 2026
Hampton Inn, the Villages
11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Eastern time)
Gary McDowell, of The Villages, Florida, transitioned to his heavenly home peacefully at the age of 90 on April 14, 2026 following a brief illness.
Born on March 9, 1936 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the only child of Carroll and Lucile McDowell. “Gary Mack” who was a beloved family comedian, train enthusiast, and a legendary voice on the airwaves, left behind a lifetime of laughter, music, and meaningful connections. Before he rose through the ranks of becoming one of the top disk jockeys of his era, an honorable recognition is due for his service in the United States Air Force from 1955-1959. Off the air, Gary had a deep and abiding love for trains. Whether watching them pass, building quaint train cities, or simply enjoying their power and rhythm, trains brought him a quiet joy that reflected his thoughtful and observant nature. He found his greatest peace on the water with a rod in his hand. Those who knew him will remember the stories of “the one that got away,” always delivered with an exaggeration and a knowing smile.
Gary was a cherished husband, father, bonus dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughters Pam Moore of Titusville, FL, Kim Bennett of Monroe, GA, Stacey Ramia of Miami, FL, and Lori Russell of Fairhope, AL, granddaughters Heather Schneider (Curtis) of Edgewater, FL, and Megan Cornelius (Tyler) of Social Circle, GA, and grandson Garrett Haulk of Monroe, GA, as well as three great-grandchildren (Miley, Maddie, and Carson). He was preceded in death by his beloved bride Sue.
At 11am Saturday, May 2nd, a memorial service honoring Gary’s memory will be held at the Hampton Inn in The Villages (1727 NE 63rd Dr, Lady Lake, FL). Gary will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell
