IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary Richard
Seymour
November 23, 1936 – May 12, 2025
Gary Richard Seymour, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of McHenry, Illinois, passed away on May 12, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born in Pana, Illinois, on November 23, 1936, to Carl and Martha (Corley) Seymour. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in education, Gary began his career as a high school science teacher and football coach. He was known for his commitment to education and to his students, many of whom remember his practical, straightforward approach in the classroom and on the field. Later, Gary worked for McGraw Hill as their National Science Consultant, training teachers across the country in hands-on science instruction. His work helped shape science education at a national level, and he remained dedicated to improving how science was taught in schools. Gary was an avid golfer and fisherman, hobbies he enjoyed throughout his life. In his early years, he was a competitive swimmer. He appreciated a good beer, a well-executed golf swing, and time spent outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Diane Simone Seymour; his daughters, Karen Seymour-Ells and Kristy Hopkins (Dave); as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many friendships from his years as a teacher and coach, relationships he maintained with quiet consistency. Gary lived life on his own terms and valued independence and directness. As he often said—and as his family now echoes—"like Frank Sinatra, he did it his way." Memorials can be made to The Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or Cornerstone Hospice.
