Obituary

Gerald Francis O'Neil, 83, of Groveland, FL (formerly of the Southern Tier), passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 after a debilitating struggle with heart disease and congestive heart failure. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 58 years, Marcia Wright O'Neil, his son, Dane Ochis-O'Neil of Gulph Mills, PA and his devoted and loving daughter, Beverly (Buffy) O'Neil Tuttle and son-in-law Todd Tuttle of Greensboro, NC, as well as three grandchildren, Kenzie Ochis-O'Neil, Addison O'Neil Tuttle and Griffin O'Neil Tuttle. Gerry was predeceased by his parents Hugh Joseph O'Neil and Mary Ann Perella O'Neil of Binghamton, NY. He is survived by his brother, H. Timothy O'Neil of Falmouth, ME and Naples, FL and Patricia O'Neil Novak (Robert) of Johnson City, NY along with several nieces and nephews and their children. Gerry was born on November 8, 1941 in Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY. He graduated from Binghamton Central High School in January 1960 and from Broome Technical Community College in June 1963 with an Associate Degree in Engineering Science. He was drafted by the U. S. Army in January 1964 and was stationed in Heilbron, Germany as a SPC-4 Radio Operator, completing his tour of duty in January 1966. He began his thirty-one year career with IBM at the Vestal Supplies Division as a Lab Technician, then worked at the Federal Systems Division in Owego in Component Failure Analysis and retired from IBM Endicott in 1993 in Information Systems Support. After retiring from IBM, he owned and operated GO PC Support for eleven years, providing computer support to local real estate offices, attorneys and other local businesses in the Southern Tier, finally retiring for good in 2006. Gerry was an avid barbershopper singing with the Southerntiersmen Barbershop Chorus in Binghamton and the Heart of Carolina Chorus in Durham, NC for over forty years combined. He was a sought after bass and sang in several quartets, most notably the Local Chord Company and New York News. He also sang in two mixed quartets with Marcia, Sound Celebration and Kindred Spirits, in NY and FL respectively. Gerry was a motocross enthusiast, runner (ran the 1988 Marine Marathon in Washington, DC with Buffy), cyclist, duplicate bridge player, personal computer consultant and handyman … he could fix anything! He loved working with his hands and was a life-long learner. He thoroughly enjoyed cruising and traveling with Marcia, and spending time with wonderful, caring friends. He especially enjoyed Buffy's week long visits every month this year to spend time with him. His greatest joy was his two standard poodles, Finney and Tucker, who were always by his side and brought a smile to his face every day. He will be remembered for his quirky and witty sense of humor, his good-natured demeanor, his helpful and supportive ways, his love of craft beers and his insatiable sweet tooth! A celebration of life will be held in Florida on Friday, August 1, 2025. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Barbershop Harmony Society for Harmony University Scholarships. https://www.harmonyfoundation.org/hu-ot-donation.
