Obituary

German Montoya, M.D., age 87, of Orlando, Florida, passed away March 22, 2023. Born in La.Victoria, Valle, Colombia, he served in the Colombian military before earning his medical degree from National University in Bogota in 1961. He then moved to the United States for an Internship at Mercy Hospital in 1962; and from there he went on to complete residencies in General Surgery and Neurology, and a Neurosurgical Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic. During this time, he also spent a year doing research in London, England, as an Academic and Senior Registrar at The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. Upon completion of his training, Dr. Montoya became a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, serving as a Commander at the Naval Hospital Memphis in Millington, TN. He moved to Orlando, FL in 1972, and spent more than 40 years as a dedicated surgeon to the Central Florida community. Over the years, he served as the Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery for both Florida Hospital and Orlando Health; and he was among the first neurosurgeons to bring pediatric services to the children in this area. He was passionate about Neuro Trauma and remained on the ORMC Trauma call panel until his surgical retirement in 2016. He continued to see clinic patients until he was 85 years old.

He was a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Florida Neurological Society and various other professional organizations over the years.

Dr. Montoya enjoyed an appreciation of European motorcars, traveling with his wife and family, the beach and sailing, road cycling, all styles of music, historical and science fiction novels, and visiting Orlando's fine dining establishments.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Vicki; children Ivich Neuville (David), Jean Paul (Anna), Nicole Rich (Ryan), Danielle Burgoon (Mike), Austin (Allison), and Alexander (Virginia). And 10 adoring grandchildren, Amanda, Madeleine & Caitlin Neuville; Maxine & Tex Montoya; Merritt & Walker Rich; Abigail Burgoon; and Camille & Mary Montoya.

The funeral service will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke on Friday, April 28 at 11 am, followed by a gathering at The University Club of Orlando. Arrangements are being handled by Baldwin Brothers of Winter Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Orlando Health Foundation Level One Trauma Center at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
