Obituary

Guerry M. "Toady" Thode, 82, passed away on August 19, 2026, in Safety Harbor, Florida. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Born on May 24, 1944, in Walhalla, South Carolina, Guerry built a life marked by education, professional accomplishment, faith, and a steady commitment to helping others. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama and later received an MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida.

Guerry's career reflected both technical skill and leadership in quality systems. At Honeywell, he wrote the first total quality management protocol and worked on the engine for the NASA space shuttle. He later continued his work in quality management at Johnson & Johnson, where he managed the quality program and oversaw the hospital monitoring system. His professional life was also closely connected to one of his enduring interests: career development. He cared deeply about helping others think about their goals, their work, and the direction of their lives.

That interest in helping people extended well beyond the workplace. Guerry was always interested in supporting others, especially in matters of career and life goals. A committed Christian, he served as both an elder and a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He also offered career counseling to members of his congregation, bringing together his professional experience, his faith, and his desire to be useful to others. He traveled to the Holy Land with his church, an experience that was part of his life in faith and fellowship. His baptism in the River Jordan was a deeply meaningful experience there.

Guerry was also a lifelong learner. He had a strong interest in how creativity and learning worked in the brain, and he was drawn to technology applications, especially any new gadget. These interests reflected a mind that remained engaged and curious. Those who knew him also knew his good sense of humor and the many puns he shared with friends, a simple but memorable part of the way he connected with people.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Thode; his sons, Dan Thode and Chris Thode; his daughter-in-law, Teresa Thode; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Atkinson; his granddaughters, Sasha Thode and Celeste Thode; his grandson, Campbell Atkinson-Meyer; his great-granddaughter, Gigi; and his sisters, Cathy (Thode) Morrill and Diane (Thode) Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Thode; his mother, Peggy (Ulmer) Thode; and brother, John Thode.

Guerry M. "Toady" Thode will be remembered for a life that joined engineering, leadership, faith, curiosity, and service to others. His work, his counsel, and his humor all remain part of the lasting memory he leaves with those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Florida, with dates and times to be announced, honoring Toady's impactful life and legacy.
