Helen McCartney Gettemy of Holly Hill, FL and Bloomfield, CT died on March 23, 2022, in Ormond Beach, FL. She was born on October 7, 1927, in Baltimore, MD.
She was for many years an active member of Seebreeze United Church of Christ in Daytona Beach: her late husband, Dr. James N. Gettemy, to whom she was married for 67 years, is the Minister Emeritus of Seebreeze UCC. They were married on August 4, 1945.
Helen loved learning and graduated from Adelphi University in Garden City, Long Island, received a Masters in Theology from Union Theological Seminary, and a MSW from the University of Connecticut. She taught history in West Hartford where she was also a guidance counselor. She was a marriage and family therapist and had her own therapy practice in Daytona Beach before retiring to Orleans, Cape Cod in 1987.
Helen loved reading, helping couples, teaching and her faith. She enjoyed travel, bridge, and visiting with friends. She appreciated the companionship of Richard Wehmeyer in the later years of her life.
She is survived by daughters Jessica Porter of Orleans MA, and Sara Gettemy-Worcester of Broomfield CO, grandchildren Jake Lecce, Emily Porter, Nora Lecce, Ben Porter, Megan Porter and Sam Worcester and great-grandchildren Celine Lecce and August Porter. She is survived by her brother James McCartney who resides in ME.
A memorial service will be held at Seebreeze United Church of Christ in Daytona Beach on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 3:00 p.m.. Donations can be made to her beloved Seebreeze UCC.
