Obituary

NEW SMYRNA BEACH - Henry G. "Brud" Cleaveland, a resident since May 1985, d ied Thursday, June 19, 2014. Brud was born in Cleveland, Ohio December 10,1917. He earned a B.S. degree in Education at Ohio State University; M.S. and Ed. D. degrees at U.C.L.A. He taught Health, Physical Education, and coached Swimming, Water Polo and Gymnastics during his career which included assignments at Ohio Wesleyan University, UCLA and Santa Monica College. His college teaching career was interrupted by four years Navy duty as training officer at several stations in the States and Hawaii. He also directed a swimming program at the American School in Japan. During the summers, he operated a swimming and diving school in Encino, California. After retiring from Santa Monica College in August, 1976, Brud lived in Lake Havasu City, AZ, Laguna Hills, CA and Mammoth Lakes, CA before coming to New Smyrna Beach. Over the years, he was an active member of The American Red Cross, Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis, Rotary, First Presbyterian Church, Church World Service Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity. Brud was instrumental in the establishment of the Edgewater YMCA. He was also an active competitor in Distance Road Racing, Masters Swimming, Diving, and Track & Field. He was a World Class Masters swimmer and an inspiration to many people for his love of physical fitness and his joy of life. Survivors include his wife, Betty, a daughter, Becky Cleaveland of Garden Grove, CA, a son, Bradley Cleaveland of Floral City, FL, two stepdaughters, Pat O'Hara of Springfield, VA, Christa Hyatt of Orlando, FL, a stepson, Mike Zinn of Dallas TX, eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
