Obituary

In Loving Memory of Henry Urbanski, PhD October 9, 1937 – June 14, 2025

Henry Urbanski, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed scholar, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, at age 87.

Born in pre-war Europe on October 9, 1937, Henry's early life was marked by extraordinary courage and determination. The eldest of seven brothers, he both survived the Holocaust and escaped post-war communism, immigrating to the United States in 1961.  Determined to make the most of his God given opportunity, Henry embraced his new homeland with fierce patriotism, building a remarkable legacy of intellectual achievement and cultural impact.

Henry earned his PhD in Russian Language and Studies from New York University and enjoyed a distinguished 40-year career as a professor and department head at SUNY New Paltz. A visionary educator, he founded the Language Immersion Institute, a pioneering program that transformed intensive language learning and inspired students worldwide. His commitment to cross-cultural understanding left a lasting mark.

In 2005, Henry retired to The Villages, Florida, where he lived vibrantly. An avid athlete, he excelled in biking, golf, table tennis—earning a Florida Senior Games championship—billiards, and bridge. His infectious enthusiasm and community spirit touched all who knew him.

Henry is survived by Dorota, his devoted wife of 62 years, whose love anchored him; his son, Andre; daughter, Anne; and four cherished grandchildren, who will carry forward his warmth, wisdom, and zest for life. Henry's legacy of curiosity, kindness, and dedication to family and learning endures.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a language literacy program or charity of your choice in Henry's memory, honoring his lifelong passion for education and connection.
