Howard Alton Sheffield, 89, of Port Orange, Florida, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, with his family by his side. Born May 17, 1937, in Trenton, Florida, to the late Joseph Simeon and Leola Belle (Stone) Sheffield, Howard was a man of deep faith, and loving devotion to his family.

Howard grew up in Dunnellon, Florida, where he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, and water-skiing. He met his wife, Myrna Allen, at Dunnellon High School, and they were happily married for 62 faithful years. Howard and Myrna lived many places during their married life including Arizona, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Ohio, but they spent most of those years in McAlisterville, Pennsylvania, where they raised their family at the base of Shade Mountain. In later years, Howard and Myrna returned to Ocala, Florida, near most of their extended family. After Myrna passed away in 2019, Howard moved to the Daytona Beach area and finally lived at Seagrass Village of Port Orange.

A boilermaker welder by trade, Howard was good at fixing things and believed there was almost nothing that couldn't be repaired with enough ingenuity and plenty of duct tape.

Above all, his faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life, and he believed in the importance of prayer. He found great joy and comfort in gospel music, and the hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" held a special place in his heart.

He was the devoted husband of the late Myrna Sheffield, whom he cared for with gentle devotion until her passing. Howard's life will be celebrated and missed deeply by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Daryl Varner, and Lee and Mark Bjornsen.

His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Zachariah Varner (Laura), Amber Boren (Joshua), and Elizabeth Bjornsen (engaged to Daniel Gregersen). He also cherished his great-grandchildren: Ben and Wesley Varner, and Laphicet Boren. Howard was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jenni Varner, as well as his siblings, Gerald Sheffield and Evelyn Harper. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Sharon Fronk, and many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.

While no immediate service is planned, the family looks forward to gathering in the future to celebrate and share memories of Howard’s life.
