Hugh R. Merriss "Butch", 79, of Cape Coral, Florida passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 29, 1943, he was the son of the late Ruth C. (Hazlett) Conro and nephew to the late Barbara H. and Alden P. Manter. After being part of the swim team, Hugh graduated from Attleboro High School in 1962.

In 1965, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country until being honorably discharged in 1969. After, Hugh was a meat cutter for many years working at different grocery stores including Fernandez in Massachusetts and Price Chopper in Vermont.

Prior to starting a family, Hugh enjoyed his summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and winters in Killington, Vermont where he built many memories that he would constantly share over the years.

The most important thing to Hugh was his family. He always made sure he was at every school activity, field trip, and sporting event. He loved taking his kids on vacations to places such as; Wells, Maine, the Great Escape Theme Park in New York, and Orlando, Florida.

After retiring to Cape Coral, Florida, he always looked forward to February so he could enjoy his Boston Red Sox spring training season tickets with his son.

Friends and family will remember his love for all the New England sport teams, his collection of animal shirts, tinkering in his garage, finding a good bargain, and dressing in green for St. Patrick's Day.

He leaves behind four children; Kristin Walsh of Rehoboth, MA, Jason Merriss and his wife, Brandi (Chipps) Merriss of Cape Coral, FL, Shawn Merriss of Cape Coral, FL, and Heather Merriss of Southington, CT; six grandchildren: Jack Walsh, Quinn Walsh, and Landon Godfrey of Rehoboth, MA, Kinsley and Ashlynn Merriss of Cape Coral, FL, and Isabella Merriss of Southington, CT.

Relative and close friends are cordially invited to attend the Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 30, 2023, starting 1:00 PM at the Hope Hospice Chapel located at 2430 Diplomat Pkwy E, Cape Coral, FL, 33909.
