Obituary

James Newton "Skip" Askew, 80, died of a sudden heart attack on 14 March 2020, at The Villages Regional Hospital in The Villages, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his father, Newton "Newt" Askew; his mother, Harriet Jessie (Millard) Askew Doughty; his brother, Wallace Hutchison Askew ; his grandparents, Albert Wallace and Mary Frances (Davis) Askew, and Omer Hutchison and Effie Marie (Owen) Millard.

He is survived by a niece, Shannon Lee Askew-Kipp Williams (Gary) of Bryan, TX; a step-sister Brooke (Doughty) Rutinsky (Keith) of Pembroke Pines, FL; several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and sister-law, Nora Lee Askew, of Leesburg, FL.

Jim was born on 19 April 1939 in Miami Beach, FL to Newt and Harriet Askew.  He graduated in 1957 from Miami Technical High School (later called "Lindsey Hopkins") and attended Miami-Dade Community College.  He served three years in the United States Air Force (1957-1960) earning the rank of Airman Second Class.

In 1961 he joined the Dade County Public Safety Department (formerly Dade County Sheriff's Office, currently Miami-Dade Police Dept.) and retired with the rank of Sergeant in 1991. Jimmy was deeply involved in law enforcement-related activities and associations for almost 60 years.  He also enjoyed sports of many kinds including fishing, hunting, boating, and especially golf, and was an avid University of Miami fan.  He also loved entertaining and feeding his friends.

Skipper was a gregarious, affectionate man with a strong sense of honesty and integrity, honor and obligation.  He was divorced and had no children but his friends and family will always remember him as a caring, generous person who consistently tried to see the positive in people and situations.

A Celebration Of Life gathering will take place on Friday, August 21st, 2020 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home, 3990 East State Road 44, Suite 105, Wildwood, FL 34785 from 9 to 1030 with an funeral procession to follow and Inurnment to take place at Florida National Cemetery at 1130 am.  For those going to Florida National Cemetery you must wear a mask at the cemetery per the cemetery rules.
