James Edward Bess 1943–2026
Beloved Father, Husband, Brother, and Friend
James Edward Bess passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, at Spanish Plains Hospital in Lady Lake, Florida.
He will be lovingly remembered by his family, dear friends, and all who held him close.
Born and raised in Sparta, Illinois, James carried with him the strength, determination, and sense of community that shaped his early years. As a young man, he excelled in sports, especially football, where his competitive spirit, energy, and perseverance were evident to everyone who knew him.
James spent his professional life in the printing industry, a field he genuinely loved. Printing was more than a career to him; it was a craft, a source of pride, and an important part of who he was.
James lived fully and with purpose. He loved his family deeply, cherished his closest friends, and left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wives, Janice Fraley-Bess and Sue Cole-Bess, and by his siblings Lucille, Lorraine, Wanda, and Joe.
James is survived by his son, Jeremy Bess, and Jeremy’s wife, Kay; grandchildren Shawn and Amy; stepdaughter Lisa Dolson and her husband, Mike, and grandchildren Ryan, Conor, and Conor’s wife, Allison; and stepson Brad Barnett and his wife, Raegan, and grandchildren Sidney, Stella, and James and longtime partner Sandy DiTieri.
A service to honor and celebrate James’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be shared with family and friends. In the meantime, those who knew James are invited to remember him in their own meaningful way and to hold close the memories, stories, and moments that reflected his life and the people he loved.
James touched many lives as a father, husband, brother, friend, and cherished loved one. His life was meaningful, his presence unforgettable, and his memory will remain deeply treasured. He will be dearly missed.
