James Hugh Gaine, 80, a resident of Fort Myers since 2013, formerly of Laurel, Maryland and Smithtown, New York, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018.
Son of the late Thomas and Mary (McCullagh) Gaine, he was born October 13, 1937 in Smithtown, NY. After graduating from Smithtown High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served as a petty officer 2nd class, participating in Operation Deep Freeze.
Jim was a Metropolitan Police Officer in the 2nd district, Washington DC, reaching a rank of Detective 1 before his retirement. After leaving the police department, Jim spent the rest of his career as a loss prevention specialist for various retail outlets, concluding his career with Costco Wholesale Corporation.
On September 14, 1963, Jim married Rosemary Helen Gaine, his wife of 49 years. She predeceased him on August 18, 2012.
He is survived by his daughters and their families, Mary and John Crowley, Michelle and Danny Smith, Maureen and Brian MacLean; his nine grandchildren, Steven, Jack, Caitlin, Kielene, Michael, Helen, Sarah, Patrick and Matthew; his great-granchild Joseph; his brother and sister-in-law John and Edie Gaine, and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Tom and Lucille Gray, Charlie and Fran Gray, Debby Gray and Claudette Gaine. Jim is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Along with his wife and parents, Jim is preceded in death by his brothers Thomas, William and George Gaine, his sisters-in-law Marie and Dorothy Gaine, and his brother-in-law Robert Gray.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Hospice of Ft Myers, Florida, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
Services to celebrate Jim's life will be held in October, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church of Fort Myers, FL, where he will be interred with his wife in the church's memorial garden.
