James Michael Gilligan, 82, passed away on March 30, 2026, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Born on October 30, 1943, in Worcester, Massachusetts, James lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness, and a deep love for his family.
Son of the late James Gilligan and Vivian Peterson. He grew up in Worcester and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts. His career began as a quality control engineer at Hawaiian Tropics before he transitioned to healthcare in his late forties. Becoming a licensed respiratory therapist, Jim worked in emergency rooms across Arizona, dedicating himself to helping others during critical moments.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Jim served with honor during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1966. His military service instilled in him a sense of discipline and resilience that shaped his life.
Jim found joy in many hobbies and interests. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing and hiking, finding peace in nature’s beauty. He was also a skilled craftsman who built black powder rifles and intricate model ships with meticulous care. His passion for travel allowed him to explore new places and cultures, broadening his perspective on life.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Leith Patnaude; his daughter Larissa Starr; sons Sean Gilligan and James Gilligan; grandchildren Riley Morrison, Cassie Gilligan, and Jimmy Gilligan; sister Donna Donohue; nephew Tim Donohue; and niece Melissa Gortney. His family brought him immense pride and joy throughout his life.
A practicing Buddhist, Jim’s faith guided him toward living with compassion and understanding. His legacy is one of love, kindness, and an enduring curiosity about the world.
A funeral service will be held on April 10, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, 1 North Causeway. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
