Obituary

James L. Holloway, Jr. was a man whose presence filled every room with laughter, wisdom, and unwavering love. Born with a golden heart and gifted hands, James lived a life that reflected resilience, dedication, and a deep love for his family.

James graduated from Riverdale High School, where he excelled in both basketball and track. He later attended masonry school and built a remarkable 40-year career as a truck driver. Known for his tireless work ethic, James was also a skilled builder and supervisor with Tobler Construction Company.

During the early years of their marriage, James and his wife, Marcella, lived in Pennsylvania for ten years. Everyone who met James there loved him—his warm spirit, humor, and helpful nature made him unforgettable. It wasn't long before he became everyone's trusted handyman, always ready to lend a hand and brighten someone's day.

As one of nine siblings, he had a treasure trove of colorful stories from his childhood—and he never missed a chance to share them. Whether it was a mischievous tale from his youth or a memory that brought tears of laughter, James could turn any moment into a lesson or a laugh. There was truly never a dull moment in the Holloway household, and James carried that same vibrant energy throughout his life. He loved sharing life lessons with his children and grandchildren, often with a joke or corny punchline tucked in.

James was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. He loved gardening, cooking, watching movies (over and over again), and making people laugh—even through pain and illness. No matter how low he felt, James still found a way to bring joy to others.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Marcella Holloway; his children, Tavares (Yuquan) Holloway, James (Autumn) Holloway, and LaShonda Wiggins; and his stepchildren, Tyrone Mickens, Taylor Mickens, and Tristian Mickens. He was the proud grandfather of Harrison, Kendall, Lydia-Joi, James Douglas, Tionne, Ari, Ayla, Jeremie, and JaBari. He is also survived by his siblings Willie Powell, Etta Powell, Rose Holloway, Larry Holloway, and John (Tracee) Tobler, and his special sister-in-law, Ethel Pearl Powell. He leaves behind his mother-in-law, Geraldine Patterson, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Holloway and Mae Etta Mann, and his siblings Walter Powell, William Powell, Eunice Banks, and sister-in-law Robin Holloway.

James Holloway, Jr.'s legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well lived. Though his hardworking hands are now at rest, the stories he told, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave will live on in all who had the joy of knowing him.

God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be,

So He put His arms around you and whispered, "Come to Me."

A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest—

God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
