Obituary

James Thomas "Murph" Murphy, 95, of Venice, Florida, departed this world on January 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and boundless kindness.

A proud son of Ironton, Ohio, Murph's journey began as a basketball star at Ironton High School ('48), leading to a college scholarship. His commitment to service called him to the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, after which he pursued higher education, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in Advanced Technology.

His remarkable career spanned education and infrastructure, serving as the youngest high school principal in his district, an industrial arts teacher, Director of Buildings and Grounds at Eastern Kentucky University, Assistant Director Physical Plant at University of Cincinnati, Director of Physical Facilities at The Ohio State University, and Operations Consultant at Tate Monroe Water Association. Yet Murph's greatest achievement was his impact on others – he never met a stranger and touched countless lives with his legendary generosity and wit.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Darlene Ruth Roberts Murphy, and was preceded in death by his son Maurice Ray Murphy. His memory lives on through his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the countless friends who became family.

A private burial service with military honors will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, honor Murph's spirit by extending kindness to a stranger – perhaps with a cup of coffee or a cold beer.

The family extends special gratitude to Jennifer Flick, NP, for her dedicated care over the past 15 years.
