Obituary

James William Whelan, 87, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away on March 1, 2025. A viewing and funeral mass will be held at The Basilica of St Paul on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:00 am, followed by burial in Hillside Cemetery, Ormond Beach.

Jimmy was born on August 12, 1937, in Hempstead, New York to James C. and Elizabeth F. Whelan. After earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University, Jimmy worked as an aerospace engineer for RCA in Princeton, New Jersey. He then obtained a Master of Electrical Engineering from Princeton University. Throughout his four-decade career with RCA, Honeywell, E-Systems, and Raytheon, he designed sophisticated communication systems, many of which were Top Secret, for the US military and aerospace industry.

Jimmy regularly participated in his local Catholic parish in each community where he lived. He also volunteered for various Pro-Life causes, including serving as president of St. Petersburg Right to Life. A proud Irishman, he was a member of the Hibernians.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maureen (nee Colgan); his son, Eugene of Jupiter, FL; two daughters, Theresa of Paris, France, and Mrs. Maureen Anouge of Windemere, FL; two sisters, Mrs. Marilyn Rienecker of Cutchogue, New York, and Mrs. Kathleen Tierney of Weymouth, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
