Jane Alston
Emmert
September 16, 1944 – February 8, 2022
JANE ALSTON (GRIFFITHS-EMMERT) HERTZ
Born to Samuel and Anne (Airey) Griffiths
On September 16, 1944 in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
Jane left us on February 8, 2022 from Edgewater, Florida.
Her childhood was spent in Brewster, MA where she attended Brewster Elementary school while living in a house built by her dad and grandfather.
Her father was an accomplished violinist who taught music at Dennis-Yarmuth High School, and her mother taught piano in their home.
Coming from such a background, it was only natural that Jane would love music; she played the viola in a string quartet, and the piano for fun.
Jane was highly intelligent; a straight-A student who made the honor roll all through her high school years and was valedictorian when she graduated from Dennis-Yarmuth High in 1962. She then attended Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida where she majored in French and Latin, with thoughts of becoming a schoolteacher.
After spending a year in France after graduation, she took a job at Westinghouse in Jacksonville, Florida; a few years later she took a job with Lorber International in Orange County, California. She travelled extensively to several countries in Europe and Asia until she retired in 1988.
In 1989, she met the man who would be her friend, travelling companion and husband for the next 33 years. Together they visited every state except Maine, and after living in North Carolina for a few years, they settled in Edgewater, Florida in 1997.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Hertz, his extended family of siblings, nieces and nephews and several lifelong friends she has known since childhood.
Services will be private and, in leu of flowers, she asks that donations be made in her memory to the ASPCA.
