Obituary

Janice Allen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2025, in Ocala, FL, following a courageous battle with ALS. A lifetime New Yorker, Janice was known for her sharp wit, her mastery of card games with friends, and her unwavering devotion to her family.

Born in Brooklyn on June 2, 1951, Janice was the middle of five children born to the late George B. and Evelyn E. Allen. She grew up in Gerritsen Beach and graduated from St. Edmund Catholic High School.

Following high school, Janice set her sights on Manhattan’s financial district. She spent many years in the fund investment department at TIAA, followed by a tenure at Cantor Fitzgerald. In later years, she delighted friends and family with colorful stories of Wall Street in the 1980s and the legendary meals she shared at Harry’s. While working full-time, she achieved a personal milestone by earning her BA in Business Administration from Pace, a feat that brought her immense pride. She eventually concluded her professional career at Kingsborough Community College.

Janice’s greatest love was her son, Matthew, with whom she shared a lifetime of travel and adventure, including a memorable cruise to Alaska. A true lover of New York, she was happiest at the Saratoga races or near the ocean. Whether she was sailing with her brother Steve or enjoying the salt air from her home in Rockaway Beach, the water was where Janice felt most at home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Steve Olsen. Janice’s legacy lives on through her beloved son, Matthew Allen; her daughter-in-law, Taylor; and her grandson, Alex. They were the joys of her life and cared for her with extraordinary love and gentleness throughout her illness.

She is also survived by her brothers, Billy Allen (Barbara) of Greensboro, GA, and John Allen (Sophia Argeropoulos) of Ocala, FL; her sister, Elizabeth Allen of New Jersey; and a large, loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her family extends their deepest gratitude to her incredible neighbors, whose kindness and support were a mainstay in her later years. She will be greatly missed.

A service will be held at St Francis DeSales in the spring.
