Obituary

Janis Layne Matthews, age 69, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026. She was born on June 5, 1956, in Richmond, Virginia, to Dorothy Gay White and the late Marvin White Sr.

She shared 47 loving years of marriage with her devoted husband, Edwin Matthews. Together they built a life centered around family, laughter, resilience, and unconditional love.

She was a proud and loving mother to Nicole Harrison, Casey Trainham, and Steven Matthews, and a caring stepmother to Kelly Fitzgerald and Candy King. She was also a cherished grandmother to eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom brought tremendous joy to her life.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Gay White; her sisters, Bonnie Robinson and Cathy White; her brothers, Marvin White Jr. and David White; along with numerous nieces, nephews, countless friends, and many others whose lives were touched by her kindness, humor, and strength.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin White Sr.

She spent most of her career working in customer service, where her warm personality and ability to connect with people made lasting impressions on everyone she met. She lived in Grand Island, Florida, and truly enjoyed the simple joys in life — cooking, spending time with friends and family, sharing laughs, and indulging her love of chocolate.

Known for her wonderful sense of humor and strong spirit, she had a way of making others smile even during difficult times. She faced many serious health challenges throughout her life. Through it all, she fought with incredible courage, determination, and grace, overcoming obstacles that would have defeated many others. Her strength inspired everyone who knew her.

Above all else, she loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Her family and friends will forever remember her resilience, laughter, stubborn strength, and the warmth she brought into every room.

She will be greatly missed and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
