IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jean M
Hemingway
May 17, 1951 – April 23, 2017
Jean Monica Hemingway, M.D., age 65, died Sunday, April 23 at her home in Geneva, Florida after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
Jean is survived by her two children: Joseph Hemingway and Soraya Hanzus. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchild, Connor Hanzus, and both her dog and two cats. Additionally, Jean is survived by her mother Claire O'Connor.
Jean was an accomplished woman – serving as valedictorian of her graduating high school class before attending nursing school in New York City. She went on to join the U.S. military and served as a Lieutenant in the Navy. She couldn't have been prouder to faithfully serve her country.
Jean's biggest academic accomplishment though was deciding to go back to school years later – and become a doctor. In 1999, she was by far the oldest in her graduating class – at a whopping age of 48 – at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.
Jean took it upon herself as a psychiatrist to help those who needed help the most – working to treat the severely mentally ill at the Cleveland Clinic, Heartland Behavioral Healthcare, Orlando VA Medical Center, Health Central, Orlando Regional Medical Center as well South Seminole Hospital. She was particularly known for her wonderful bedside manner learned from years practicing as an RN. On top of all that, she tirelessly moonlighted overnight and on weekends at various mental health facilities and also enjoyed her tenure as an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida.
A viewing held at Baldwin Brothers Apopka ( 2036 Sprint Blvd. Apopka, FL 32703) will take place on Monday, May 1 at both 2-4 and 7-9PM. Another viewing will take place on Tuesday, May 2 at 10-11AM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church ( 869 Maitland Ave. Altamonte Springs, FL 32701) and will be immediately followed by a funeral mass at 11AM. The burial will take place later on that day at 2PM at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell ( 6502 SW 102 nd Ave Bushnell, FL 33513 ).
Donations can be made in Jean's honor to either the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the ASPCA.
