Obituary

Jeanne Marie Flanigan of New Smyrna Beach Florida entered eternal life on March 19, 2025. We believe she waited for everyone to get together for one more St. Patrick's Day! Born in Olean NY on February 27, 1943 she was the daughter of the late William M. Linnan Sr and Genevieve Toohey Linnan.

Jeanne was predeceased by Richard E. Flanigan Sr, her brothers William M. Linnan Jr, and David J. Linnan. She is survived by her loving children, Heather Flanigan Austin and John G. Austin III of New Smyrna Beach FL, and Richard E. Flanigan Jr of New Smyrna Beach FL. MumMum was the grandparent name she chose. MumMum's babies are Elizabeth Marie Austin and Jordan Franklin of Kailua, HI, John G. Austin IV of New Smyrna Beach FL, and Sophia Anne-Marie Flanigan of New Smyrna Beach FL. Her legacy continues to live on in her great grandchildren Elliana Marie Franklin and Austin Kai Franklin. She is also survived by her brother, James Buzz Linnan and Maura Gannon of Key West, FL, and niece Brigid M Linnan, Steve, Trent and Sean Westcott of New Hampshire. Many friends she chose as family call her MumMum too, including Paula, Matt, Gene and Olivia Palminteri Daniel of New Smyrna Beach FL, and Martha and Wade Austin Moran and family of New Smyrna Beach FL. She remembered ALL those who called her MumMum individually in her daily prayers.

Jeanne received her primary education at the Academy of the Holy Names, Albany, NY. She earned a Bachelors of Science in Home Economics and Education from the State University of NY at Oneonta. Jeanne was a renowned teacher of Home Economics and Early Childhood Development in Iowa, NY, Connecticut and Florida. Her greatest joy was inspiring her students including high school kids, young parents and vocational students. She became an administrator at the Orlando Vo-Tech Vocational Center. Jeanne was recognized as 1998 Disney's Teacherrific Alternative Educator. Jeanne designed and advocated through grant writing to build the Outdoor Learning Environment at Orlando Vo Tech, which was named in her honor in downtown Orlando.

Jeanne believed life was best lived at the beach, surrounded by her people and her babies, but don't forget the snacks and hobbit breakfast. Upon her retirement, she went to work for her children at Boston's Fish House NSB and as a Nature Interpreter for The Arbor Day Foundation, Nebraska City. The world is a better place for having Jeanne here for 82 years. Generations of families learned from MumMum – at school, at church, in Publix, at the beach and everywhere she could help small humans feel heard and safe. She often referenced the poet Maya Angelou in giving advice, " We do the best we know how at the time. When we learn better ways of doing things, we do better things."

Funeral services will be Monday, March 24, 2025 10:00am Our Lady Star of the Sea with a reception to follow immediately at the Parish Hall.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Human Service Mission through Our Lady Star of the Sea New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
