for Joan Goggin Fisher-Powers

Born on April 1st, 1927, to Joseph and Eleonore (Wood) Goggin in Catskills, NY. Joan was raised on Staten Island, NY and Rutherford, NJ and attended Syracuse University before marrying Harry Albert Fisher in 1946. Joan was a stay-at-home mother to six children for 23 years. During that time, she often volunteered for school, church, and scouting organizations. In 1957, along with seven other couples, the Fishers were responsible for bringing St Pauls Catholic Church to the very rural community of Damascus, MD by holding catechism classes in their homes and appealing to the archbishop of Washington, D.C. At that time Joan served as Grand Regent to the local court of The Catholic Daughters of America.

In 1970 Joan began her working career as a secretary at a private insurance agency. She then worked as an executive secretary at both Northwestern Connecticut Community College and the UCONN School of Social Work. While at NCCC, she earned an A.S. Degree in Secretarial Science in 1977. Joan went on to retired at age 57 as an Administrative Assistant to two Vice Presidents of CIGNA’s Sales Department. However, she continued to support her fashion hobby with part-time employment at Talbots clothing store for the next 20 years.

After the end of her marriage to Harry Fisher, Joan married Leonard Brumby in 1984. Leonard was notably connected to the American Kennel Club. Theirs was an enjoyable retirement spending time between, Syosset, NY and Sarasota FL until Leonard became ill and passed away in 1990. Joan continued to live in Sarasota where she was a major contributor to the construction of a new St Patrick’s Church.

In 2005, Joan moved to The Villages, FL. She has lived in the neighborhoods of Liberty Park, Virginia Trace and Hadley. She was a member of St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church where she met her future husband William Powers on Palm Sunday when he had been beside her. On exiting the church, he noted that they both were alone and invited her to dinner.

Joan was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women, The Villages Genealogy Society, and the Irish American Club. She also joined in the Grovewood ladies and coed golf groups (achieving a HOLE in one at age 81), the Polo Club Boosters and liked to play bridge, mahjong and enjoyed many social activities. She achieved a hole in one.

Other than her parents and previous husbands, Joan was predeceased by a daughter Cheryl Brandt, son Robert Fisher, infant granddaughter JoAnna Brandt, sister Mildred Depasquale, brother Joseph Goggin and son in law John Colavecchio.

Survivors include her loving husband William Powers, devoted children Gary (Petra) Fisher, Lynda Colavecchio, Richard (Colleen) Fisher, JoAnn (Michael) Fagan, 14 adoring grandchildren, multiple great grandchildren, several great, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Gloria Lehland, nieces, nephews, and many, many dear friends.

A memorial Mass will be held at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on June 9,2026 in Wildwood, FL at 11:00 am.

Funeral Mass to be held at Our Lady of Hope Parish, Immaculate Conception in New Hartford, Ct at a date to be decided with internment to follow at the Village Cemetery in New Hartford.”
