Obituary

John R. (Jack) Bushy, 85, died peacefully January 29, 2. 2026, at his home in Daytona Beach, Florida after a long illness, surrounded by his caring wife, loving daughter, and Otis, his watchful canine protector.

Jack and Joan, his twin sister were the youngest of six children, born December 8, 1940, in Grand Forks, ND to Ethyl (Carlsen) and Raymond (Dick) Bushy. Both parents died when the twins were toddlers; subsequently to be raised by family relatives and older sisters. He was the last surviving member of this family.

Jack attended Sacred Heart School in East Grand, MN Forks and often reminisced about their winning football team on which he was leading athlete. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps at 17 years of age. His life legacy was, “Once a Marine. Always a Marine”. He proudly wore a cap with the USMC insignia everywhere, even at home.

Upon discharge he relocated to Bismarck, ND, graduating with a BS and teaching certificate from the University of Mary. While attending there, he met his future wife Angeline (Angie) Silbernagel who was enrolled in the baccalaureate nursing program. They married on December 29, 1965, celebrating 60 years of marriage in December 2025. Their daughter, Andrea Dacyl, Jacks pride and joy of being her dad, was born February 3, 1971, in Lidgerwood ND. Jack was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and to extended family by marriage.

Jack taught and coached students in Bismarck, Selfridge, and Lidgerwood ND and Miles City, MT schools and the Academic Counselor at Miles Community College, Miles City, MT. He obtained a Master of Science Degree in (MS) in counseling from Montana State University – Billings, and Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Kansas (KU). He worked as an MSW st the Veterans Health Administration (Vietnam) Outreach Clinics in Salt Lake City, UT, Bismarck, ND and Daytona Beach, Florida. He was a role model for students and a respected peer and professional by veterans he worked with.

They relocated to sunny Florida in 2000. He missed ND-based family and friends but not the extremely cold weather and shoveling snow. Jack always was concerned about the welfare of animals, wild and domesticated. In 2017 he adopted Otis, a corgi-shepherd from the Halifax Humane Society, “After interviewing 63 other dogs that day”. Otis remained watchful and on high alert, protecting Jack’ into his final hours.

He was a lifelong dedicated Minnesota Vikings fan, sharing spirited pre-game predictions and post-game replay discussions with his friend Gary Imig a Green Pay Packers enthusiast. Jack followed his alma mater KU Jayhawks basketball team and enjoyed movies, especially having WW II and ancient Roman themes. With streaming technology, he continued to watch golf tournaments, football and basketball games, and movies even while home bound.

Survivors include his wife Angie and daughter Andrea, sisters in law Alice (Vic) Careful, Carol (Bob), Adella (Bruce) Poppke, Mary Banek, Nina Bushy; Silbernagel brothers-in-law Peter (Cathy), Paul (Barb), Dave (Jannette), Martin (Patty), Urban, Dennis, Gilbert, Lyle and Tom; Frank Bosch, Roger Reese, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Ethel Bushy, sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty (Elroy) Kvasager, Pat (Donald) Zedlick, Denise (Ron) Frydenlund, twin-sister Joan, brother Donald; mother and father-in-law, Peter and Rose (Ternes) Silbernagel, sisters-in-law Donna Bosch, Laura Silbernagel.

Jack’s suffering has ended but he is greatly missed by his family.
